In the early 50's, Tony Bennett had a string of hit singles including "Because of You," and Hank Williams'
"Cold, Cold Heart," which made him a favorite on the pop record and radio play charts. Interestingly, when the recording companies' R & D executives were requiring vocalists to record 'novelty' types of songs, Tony Bennett adhered to his own artistic preferences and his artistry and his successes continued to develop and grow. As his popularity continued through the following decades, his albums and singles continued to be best sellers and he played to sold-out audiences throughout the world. His popularity, both in recording sales and personal appearances holds strong to the present day.
Tony Bennett has received multiple Grammy Awards for his singles and albums. He also won an Emmy and Cable Ace Award for his groundbreaking television special, "Live By Request . . . Tony Bennett," which featured a unique audience call-in feature, a concept created by Bennett which has become a regular special on the A & E network. A dedicated painter, Bennett continues to paint every day, even while touring internationally. He was chosen as the official artist of the 2001 Kentucky Derby and the United Nations commissioned him to create two paintings for their 50th anniversary.
Throughout his career, Tony Bennett has always put his heart and time into humanitarian concerns. His original paintings each year grace the American Cancer Society's holiday greeting card. His work for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Martin Luther King Center and his fundraisers for many worthy causes are an indication of his willingness to help.
What sums up Tony Bennett's popularity, legacy and longevity? Perhaps a New York Times writer made the best observation. "What accounts for the Bennett magic? Artistry certainly. The repertory is indeed classic . . . But perhaps more important is his ability to convey a sense of joy, of utter satisfaction in what he is doing."
